Misopt Eye Drop combines two active ingredients, Dorzolamide (a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor) and Timolol (a beta-blocker), to create a powerful dual-action treatment for elevated intraocular pressure. This specialized formulation provides comprehensive eye pressure management.
Uses
Misopt Eye Drop treats open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in patients who haven’t responded adequately to single medications. It’s also used for normal-tension glaucoma, secondary glaucomas, and as post-surgical therapy to maintain reduced intraocular pressure.
Benefits
- Dual-mechanism action for enhanced efficacy
- Significant reduction in intraocular pressure
- Twice-daily convenient dosing regimen
- Preserves vision by preventing further damage
- Reduces risk of glaucoma progression
- Effective when monotherapy is insufficient
- Simplified treatment compared to using separate medications
- Extended duration of pressure control
How It Works
Misopt Eye Drop works through two complementary mechanisms. Dorzolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase in the eye, reducing fluid production. Simultaneously, Timolol blocks beta-adrenergic receptors, further decreasing aqueous humor production and lowering intraocular pressure to protect the optic nerve from damage.
Duration of Action
Effects begin within 30 minutes of application with maximal pressure reduction occurring 2 hours after administration. The pressure-lowering effect typically lasts 12 hours, making twice-daily dosing effective for sustained pressure control throughout the day.
Dosage
Patient Type | Recommended Dosage | Frequency |
---|---|---|
Adults | 1 drop | Every 12 hours |
Elderly | 1 drop | Every 12 hours |
Children | Not recommended | Not applicable |
Warnings
Misopt Eye Drop is contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma, severe COPD, sinus bradycardia, heart block, cardiac failure, or cardiogenic shock. Discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention if breathing difficulties, heart problems, or severe allergic reactions occur.
Side Effects
Common side effects include eye irritation, burning, stinging, blurred vision, bitter taste, and conjunctival redness. Systemic effects may include headache, fatigue, dizziness, and rarely, breathing difficulties, depression, and reduced heart rate.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy only when clearly needed and potential benefits justify possible risks to the fetus. The active ingredients can be absorbed systemically and excreted in breast milk. Exercise caution when administering to nursing women.
Interactions
- Oral beta-blockers (enhanced systemic effects)
- Calcium channel blockers (conduction disturbances)
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs (additive effects)
- Quinidine (potentiated beta-blockade)
- CYP2D6 inhibitors (increased systemic absorption)
- Digitalis with calcium antagonists (conduction time effects)
- Clonidine (possible rebound hypertension)
Precautions
Remove contact lenses before application and wait 15 minutes before reinserting. Apply gentle pressure on the tear duct for 1-2 minutes after application to reduce systemic absorption. Wait at least 10 minutes between applications of different eye medications. Store the bottle tightly closed at room temperature away from light.
Important Information
Misopt Eye Drop must be used regularly as prescribed to be effective. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Discard the bottle 28 days after opening even if solution remains. Regular eye examinations are necessary to monitor intraocular pressure and evaluate treatment effectiveness.
